Rowan Williams spoke to Simon Mayo yesterday on his Radio 5 show – the interview begins about one hour (1:04) into the show and is worth a listen!

He has irked some environmentalists by espousing a direct carbon tax on fuel use. Some see that as a distraction from rallying support in Congress for cap-and-trade legislation that is on the table.
He is scathing of that approach. “This is analagous to the indulgences that the Catholic church sold in the middle ages. The bishops collected lots of money and the sinners got redemption. Both parties liked that arrangement despite its absurdity. That is exactly what’s happening,” he said. “We’ve got the developed countries who want to continue more or less business as usual and then these developing countries who want money and that is what they can get through offsets [sold through the carbon markets].”

Editor—I wish to draw attention to what I think is a serious problem in medical education. Since I became a consultant in 1985, some senior staff have been complaining that medical students nowadays do not know as much as they used to. This complaint has been given greater impetus by the invention of “new” medical curricula, which means that teachers now believe that they have an identifiable reason why today’s medical students are not as good as they used to be. My impression is that these complaints long predate any new curricula. It is demoralising for new students to be given the impression that they are not as knowledgeable as they should be or as others were at an equivalent stage.

“Horrifying,” “naïve,” and “flawed” are among the adjectives geneticists and isotope specialists have used to describe the “Human Provenance pilot project,” launched quietly in mid-September by the U.K. Border Agency. Their consensus: The project is not scientifically valid – or even sensible.” – Science Magazine
Boingboing has more on the proposals of trying to test nationality on the basis of genetic analysis and there’s more criticism from Academics in the same field.
This is really the first Augmented Reality tool I’ve that that’s functional and easy to use.. although I think it’ll take Royal Mail a while to catch up! (ht)

Let us pray,
Present in a world groaning under the excesses of consumption we acknowledge the inherent goodness of non-motorized human powered transportation and give thanks for the simple beauty of the bicycle. God of life,
Hear our prayer…

May the road rise to meet you….. May the wind be ever at your back. ….May all your journeying be joyous. …. And until we meet again ….may God hold you…. and your bicycles….. in the palm of God’s hand.
Go in peace and safety.
Amen.
