Facebook and Polaroids
Posted on February 18th, 2008 in internet, photography

Not so long ago I disappeared from Facebook.. the majority of the impetus to do so coming partially from j’s intuitions and thinking about what I wanted to be involved in when I read this… and when I began to realise that it was impossible to actually delete the account, but only temporarily deactivate it, it only further strengthened my resolve! (Facebook have now introduced the possibility of deleting by email.. but I’m not convinced it makes it lots easier), or that I want to submit myself to the time-devouring ad-based revenue monster.. maybe I’ll get one of these..and around the same time I discovered the amazingness of polaroids.. ahhhh…

I have read the article about facebook, its all very interesting but surely facebook as well as nearly ever other company in the capitalist world has the same aims of making money out of people. Many of them do worse things than send on statistics to other companies.
Virtual worlds will never out do the real world no matter how much the management of facebook think it will.
Like every other thing it all rests on the users, if you want to spend all your time on it thats your choice, if you want to give them information you want to be private then thats also your choice, if you want to spend money on advertised things thats your choice. But then it can also be used as a tool to keep in touch with many people that normally you wouldn’t and as a tool to arrange real life events.
And as with everything else facebook will run its course eventually, there will be a replacement that will be better and facebook will be forgotten, googles orkut anyone?

I think I agree.. and most probably its got more to do with my inability to make it “my tool” to use rather than just a accumulator of internet time per day.
The semantic web, tagging and the movement towards the integation between virtual and “real” world certainly aren’t going to go away, and i certainly don’t think they’re inherently naughty in themselves.. but as you hint at i think like pretty much everything else it’s alot about who masters who.

just felt like time..! I’m applying for jobs, and already finding a little crazy how often a search for my full name brings my old blog complete with three and a half years of ramblings and personal pictures..
So half trying to control the amount of information that floating out there freely on the interweb, and the other half an attempt to focus on what I would like to do with this blog
