A little more from Brian, John and Olive
Posted on December 10th, 2008 in faith
John and Olive Drane continue their reflections on Brian McLaren’s time in the UK, their final few phrases provide a good starting point for thinking:
One other thing we’ve been thinking about is the way Brian focused the atonement debate, with this question: what or who do we need to be saved from – from God (who is angry with us), or from evil, which is against both us and God? We’ll tease that one out a bit more later on. But it’s a good way of putting the question.

Perhaps another one of those situations where the right question gives more than the right answer..

mmm, i love the question, but i wouldn’t choose to make it an either or. i think we jolly well need Jesus for now and forever! We need him to save us from ourselves, our sin and God’s wrath against it, and the general evil in the world that exists. the question doesn’t make me think either or, it prompts a jubilant ‘once for all’ in me…. woop!

I think we’d be better off most of the time trying to ask better questions rather than grasping at easy answers. Because, after all, there are some things we can’t know for sure…
