I first caught wind of this guy through a foot note or two from “How (not) to speak of God” by Pete Rollins and a couple of posts by Shane at FakeRepublic.. however trying to find his books in Bern is a little bit hard.. I suspect they’re sufficiently mindboggling in english, never mind trying to translate from german.Â

Having philosophical/theological education that was formed mostly in institutions like Cottiers and Uisge Beathe, I don’t think I’m anywhere grasping his whole concept.. but there’s certainly enough soundbites in this film to provoke a bit of thinking… well worth 70 minutes. Sometime soon i’ll watch it with a notebook and try and blog it a little bit more thoroughly..

There’s little special moments when you’re playing music where its quite easy to get beautifully lost in the middle of a jam.. boucing ideas and riffs of other players.. gradual swells from little melodic waves gently playing around your toes to full-on sound tsumami crashing around your ears… like that one time with the ceilidh band in the GU where something crazy/special happened with Angus Mackinnon with a violin wah-pedal and thumping bass lines, or when you manage to play that Duke Special song that’s been buzzing around your head on a piano in a bedroom on White St for the first time..Last week Once captured lots of exactly those kind of moments, threw them all together with the beautiful music from Swell Season and left me with another beautiful encouragement to go back to the piano in the corner of living room. Easily my film of the year.
